Company fined for safety failings

A Bedford company that produces shower trays has been fined for safety failings following an inspection.

Luton Magistrates’ Court heard how The Shower Tray Company Limited was using a ‘mezzanine floor’ above some ground floor rooms as storage. This area was not fitted with handrails.

The company had stored packaging materials in this area, which meant that employees needed to access the area, and were therefore working at height with no reasonably practicable means to prevent them falling. The issue was noticed at an inspection on 18 September 2015 and an Improvement Notice was served.

At a subsequent visit, a week after the company should have taken remedial action to comply with the Notice, a person was observed working in the area.
